Understanding Reality

Execution begins with understanding reality.

Stronger execution muscle means recognising reality earlier and adapting faster.

The organisations with the clearest picture aren't the ones with the best dashboards. They're the ones talking to the work every day, not once a month - breaking things down small enough to actually see what's happening, and getting risks on the table early.

Confidence comes from clarity - knowing what's really going on, what the risks are, and what the path looks like.

But clarity does not equal 100% certainty.

STORY: rEALITY BITES

The day before a major national platform rollout, a concern was raised about performance under load. When I asked for evidence to quantify the risk, there wasn't any - we didn't yet have an established way of testing for it. I made sure the concern was raised explicitly at the go/no-go decision, and the recommendation was to proceed on the evidence available. That turned out to be the wrong call, and customers were significantly affected. What stayed with me wasn't the outcome, it was the lesson underneath it: leaders make decisions with imperfect information every day.

Insight

The job isn't pretending certainty exists. It's making sure risks are surfaced early enough that the organisation has genuine choices.

Once reality is visible, the next challenge is deciding what to do with it. Execution improves when organisations respond to reality rather than defend the plan.
